UNICEF sends aid to 39,000 people in South Kordofan

  • The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) announced on Thursday that it had sent an aid convoy to support 39,000 people in Dilling and Kadugli in South Kordofan State, southern Sudan.

  • Kadugli and the surrounding villages in the Western Nuba Mountains are among the areas most vulnerable to famine during the dry season, which runs from July to October, due to cut-off supply routes, restrictions on movement, hindered access to food, and disease outbreaks.

  • The convoy, consisting of eight trucks, carried health, food, and water, sanitation, and hygiene supplies to support approximately 39,000 people who have been largely deprived of humanitarian assistance.

  • An alliance comprising the Rapid Support Forces and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) has repeatedly attempted to sever the road between Dilling and Kadugli, with the most recent attempt destroying a bridge on the road connecting the two towns as well as working to cut off the road linking Dilling to North Kordofan State.

  • UNICEF stated that it is working to send an additional convoy to the city of Al-Dubaibat in South Kordofan, as part of ongoing efforts to reach children and families in hard-to-reach areas.

United Nations warns of increased attacks on bridges and roads

  • The UN humanitarian team in Sudan said that escalating attacks on bridges, roads, and other vital civilian infrastructure are hindering humanitarian access and putting civilians at greater risk.

  • Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the UN, noted that humanitarian aid resumed today along the El Geneina-Zalingei road, which connects West and Central Darfur, after a brief interruption due to insecurity and rising tensions between communities, although he noted that access remains fragile.

  • The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) indicated that this road is a vital route for transporting humanitarian aid from Chad to Darfur and Kordofan.

  • Haq said the fragility of these vital arteries was highlighted overnight in West Darfur, where explosions reportedly targeted the Ardamata bridge, which connects El Geneina to areas near the border with Chad.

  • In South Kordofan, two key bridges on the road between Kadugli and Dilling were reportedly destroyed over the weekend, disrupting civilian movement and relief operations as the rainy season begins.
